“THE BARKLEY MARATHONS: THE RACE THAT EATS ITS YOUNG” (2014)

A motivational and bewildering documentary for runners of all levels. Barkely Marathon is known as one of the hardest 100-mile races in the world wherein runners head to Tennessee every year hoping to complete all five 20-mile loops. The first race held in 1986 was conceived by Gary “Lazarus Lake” Cantrell, inspired by the escape of James Earl Ray (assassinated Martin Luther King, Jr.) from nearby Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary. There is a limit of 40 runners competing every year and each one must submit an application with a $1.60 application fee and essay with details about why they should be chosen to run. Each loop must be finish in 12 hours by the runners and if, after 40 hours, runners have only completed 60 miles, they can choose to get credit for a fun run by not finishing the race. The has been completed for 17 times already and finished by 14 runners only. This is a documentary that gives entirely unbelievable new view for a race where only few runners compete in and fewer runners finish.
